HP Envy Spectre XT review

The evolution of tablet PCs seem to have made very little impact on the usage of laptops. A laptop still has the royal supremacy when it comes to powerful computing with some mobility. A laptop is neither a perfect mobile device (like a tablet) nor a solid machine for gaming (like a desktop computer). But when you are on the lookout for best of both worlds, a laptop is the ultimate choice.

Here is a new comer to the world of laptops and HP’s series of mobile computers. The all-new HP Envy XT promises to be a worthy machine right from its offset. Let us see what this beast has got in store.

The Design

Envy Spectre XT is built with a metal design with no glass-coated lid. The machine looks pretty when flipped open as well as in its closed state. The edge-to-edge design element and its super-thin bezel add to the attraction of the device. The laptop computer weighs 3 pounds and measures 12.4 x 8.8 x 0.69 inches.
The Display

The machine’s 1,366 x 768 display is not all that crisp and clear. As in the case of all non-IPS, glossy screens, the viewing angles in the Spectre are limited. A higher resolution would have made the laptop’s display better as there is no option to upgrade to a panel with higher resolutions.

The Audio

The new Envy carries Beat Audio technology with four speakers – two on the rear side and two in the front. When the Beats feature is turned off, audio sounds a bit hollow with lack of bass. But when they were turned on, audio results were fuller and more dynamic.

Touchpad and Keyboard

The keyboard buttons are smooth and silky and the space between each keys were good for long-time, comfortable typing. The reverse functions of the key were good for adjusting brightness and volume. The touchpad functionalities were handsome with its responsive, accurate and multi-tasking abilities. Scrolling, pinch to zoom, double finger rotate and 3-finger swipe were delightful operating options.

Connectivity

The laptop is good on the connectivity front. There is power jack, 4 in 1 card reader, USB 2.0 port and dual headphone and microphone jack. You also have USB 3.0 port, Ethernet, HDMI and Kensington lock slots.

Webcam

The HD webcam did not offer crystal clear pictures with its 640 x 480 resolution. The Cyber Link YouCam application offers many webcam functions that include animated frames, photographs and avatars.

Performance

The laptop is equipped with 1.7-GHz Intel Core i5-3317U processor, 128GB Samsung SSD and 4GB of RAM.  Graphical performance however, is not Envy’s most attractive point. On the battery test which was done with full usage including continuous surfing with Wi-Fi, the machine lived up to its expectation and recorded 6 hours and 17 minutes of backup time. An Intel HD 4000 graphic chip is included to boast the device’s performance.

Applications

The laptop does not boast a galore of applications. Beyond the usual, inbuilt software that comprises of Microsoft Office, pre-installed applications are limited, with CyberLink webcam software, stealing the show. The XT is also bundled with Photoshop Elements 10 and Adobe's Premiere Elements 10. These applications are simply great for your photo editing and video editing options. The new Spectre also ships with a subscription 2-year package of Norton Antivirus Internet Security Application. This is a delightful offer, especially when you consider the usual 90-day trial offer that comes with most new laptops.

HP Envy Spectre XT comes with a limited warranty of two years. Offered only to HP customers, the laptops also feature personal assistant application that provides phone-based and online assistance for twenty-four hours a day for the following two years.

 The Final Say

The HP Envy Spectre XT may not be an exceptionally great gadget. But the slick Ultrabook has plenty of strength and power with great Audio Beats to complement its multimedia capability. Good battery life, accurate touch pad make up for its lackluster screen resolution. But if excellent performance and good overall package is your priority, then the HP Envy Spectre XT definitely deserves your attention.
