5 Ways to Increase your Miles per Gallon

Fuel costs have soared in the last few years and we’re all quite aware of the increasing cost of driving our cars. This factor means that many of us will do anything we can to save fuel and cut down on our monthly costs.
Fortunately, there are a number of ways to save on your fuel and increase your miles per gallon and most only involve a few tweaks, or small changes.

Weight

One of the most crippling things for fuel efficiency is additional weight. The more weight you have in your auto, the more it has to pull and in turn, the harder the engine has to work. This all adds to fuel costs and places a burden on finances.
Avoid carrying additional items in your trunk or boot. Many of us leave all sorts of heavy objects in there and they can really affect fuel efficiency in the long term. Items such as bike racks and roof boxes are also terrible and really will cause your car to run far more inefficiently. This is because not only do they add extra weight, they also cause additional drag and wind resistance, while impacting greatly on the aerodynamics of the car, which has been honed for efficiency.

Gears

If you drive a manual car or stick shift you’ll also need to be aware of the impact your gear choice makes on your fuel efficiency. Changing up to a higher gear where possible will usually result in less fuel being burned. On the contrary bashing up and down the gears will have the opposite effect and will burn your fuel far faster. If you listen to your car you can even hear this. Think of the difference between cruising at 60mph and taking off from traffic lights or traffic – the latter will always burn more fuel. Aim for a smooth drive to save. Many businesses who use company cars and car leasing for their business needs have been adopting better driving strategies to lower fuel costs for business.

Car Servicing

Though it may cost you money, car servicing is a great way to save on fuel and keep consumption as low as possible. A good garage will check your tuning and ensure your car is running at its optimum and smoothest. They will also check other areas that impact on mileage, including air and oil filters. Ensuring clean filters makes for optimum mileage from your beloved car.

Speed

According to the AA in the UK you burn 25% more fuel if you drive at 80mph rather than 70mph. This factor and also the small detail it is illegal to drive at this speed in most countries, should put you off.

Technology

We’ve already mentioned how city driving and being stuck in traffic impacts greatly on your fuel levels. So, why not use one of a number of smart phone apps to provide you with real time access to traffic congestion and use them to plan the fastest and smoothest route to your destination. This reduces fuel usage and also stress and you can’t ask for much more than that.
