Dark Places of the Internet

The internet is making the world smaller, there's no doubt about it. It's no longer an ordeal to speak with friends on the other side of the world, and all of the information you could ever need is just a search or two away. The interesting consequence of this, though, is that we're also increasingly finding ourselves exposed to the more offbeat, stranger side of human society. On that note, read on for our selection of five of the weirdest sites on the internet.

Check out the site here if you dare!

The Perfect Pork Martini

Yes. It's true. There is someone who gets his jollies off drinking pork martinis. I neither know nor care if this site was intended as a joke or not, but the reality of the situation speaks for itself. This guy spent an afternoon, by himself, in his home drinking vodka martinis that had been stewing in various pork products for several weeks. Then he built a webpage and wrote a significant amount about his experiences doing it. He even took pictures. We like pork as much as the next person, but some things just aren't supposed to be mixed. What is this world coming to?

Marry Your Pet?

If you love it so much, why don't you marry it? Remember when your snot-nosed elementary school classmates used to say that stupid line whenever someone expressed their affection for something? Well, these people didn't quite pick up on the irony, it seems. Instead of saying, 'shut up, stupid-head' like the rest of us, they thought, hmm, that's a pretty good idea. Then they grew up and married their cat.

Anyone else a little creeped out by the strong undercurrent of implicit bestiality running through this pastel drenched site?

YTMND

I've always been fond of Sean Connery. I mean, who isn't. The man is a great entertainer. So much class, so much cool. The Rock? SNL celebrity jeopardy? And, who can forget Bond, James Bond.

But to see him reduced to this is truly painful. It's a shame the kind of tragedies that technology allows people to enact these days. Brace yourself before checking this one out. It's about as inexplicable as they come.

Reborn Babies

Wow. This one is particularly creepy. There is an artist out there who spends days on end sewing individual hairs into the scalp of a plastic baby. She paints veins, creates lifelike eyes, and basically turns a doll into the most hauntingly realistic inanimate baby replica imaginable. She even makes the nostrils open, so that the baby can breathe, and can give the dolls a lifelike heartbeat upon customer request.

Meet an Inmate

Meet-an-Inmate.com is definitely a strange place, but there's a sad story and quite a moving sentiment behind it. The site aims to put people on the outside in touch with convicted criminals in order to provide them with some sense of hope and company.

At any rate, the site makes for very odd but interesting reading. Check it out here.

Just like watching train wrecks and the evening news, the dark places of the internet can be both fascinating and enthralling even while they appall us. This just goes to show that there is a bit of a dark side in all of us. It's just a matter of degree; and I have a feeling that there are quite a few of you out there who are not much more than a step away from getting drunk on Spam martinis and proposing to your guinea pigs!
