If you love films, you’ll probably know a little about locations. Some film producers create their artificial locations solely in a studio. Often films studios and sets are open for visitors when they are out of use. But you can’t be visiting a real place that was used in a film to put you right inside the movie. Here are some great and memorable film locations that also make a great vacation spot.
The Beach – Thailand
When Leonardo DiCaprio starred in hit film The Beach, many people had only ever dreamed of such stunning and tranquil locations made up from long secluded stretches of sandy beaches with turquoise waters and lush greenery. When the location in Thailand where the film was created became general knowledge, scores of holiday makers vowed to make this their next year’s destination. Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi are very popular islands with young travellers.
The Italian Job – Italy
Chases around Venice make the cut of both the original 1969 film and the remake in 2003 of The Italian Job. Campo San Barnaba is a popular site and has been a set for many films scenes. Other films that borrow Italy for their locations include The Godfather series, Quantum of Solace, The English Patient and Angels & Demons. With so many film locations and great architecture it’s not surprising that a house swap Italy is a popular choice of European holiday.
Star Wars – Tunisia
5 of the 6 Star Wars films used Tunisia as a location. The South of Tunisia features plenty of Dunes and Canyons and rocky scenery and hot weather that were perfect for the futuristic desert scenes in the Star Wars movies. Tunisia is just a hop away from Italy too.
Goldeneye – Russia, and London
The Pierce Brosnan Bond film was set in and around St Petersburg Russia. Interestingly, only one scene was filmed in St Petersburg in Palace Square. Other scenes from the film made very creative use of London architecture to mimic the Russian government buildings. Sites include the Langham Hotel, Portland Place, Somerset House, St Sofia’s Greek Cathedral and Draper’s Hall.
Following around the film sets is a great way to see parts of the world that you may already feel familiar with without having visited. Planning a European or USA tour of favourite films locations can be easy and still budget friendly thanks to sites like http://www.lovehomeswap.com which helps homeowners to find holiday homes to swap places with. By saving money on the accommodation, you can travel from one set to another either by road or by air, and no doubt when you arrive home again you’ll be keen to watch your favourite films again so that you can proudly say “We’ve been there!!”
