8 Things You Need to Know About Windows 8

Microsoft launches its latest operating system, Windows 8, worldwide. This operating system presenting many changes from its predecessors. From the more interesting interface, applications, to the user-friendly upgrade and installation.

For those of you who are interested but not really familiar with this long awaited operating system, here are 8 facts to get to know your Windows 8 better.

1. Availability
You can already purchase Windows 8 DVD in your town. But just in case you live in a remote area, or there is no single Microsoft reseller in town, you can buy it online.

2. Price
Windows 8 upgrade is available for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users. You can purchase it online, with the price of US$40 until June 2, 2013. If you buy it before January 31, 2013, you will get a big discount so the total price you have to pay is only US$ 14.99. The DVD version price is US$70.

3. Diversities
There are three versions of Windows 8. The most basic version aimed for regular users is called Windows 8. The features are including new start screen interface, mail, music, calendar, Internet Explorer 10, Windows Store, and desktop. Windows 8 pro, for a more advanced segment, has all Windows 8 features plus several more powerful functions like BitLocker, client hyper-v, domain joins, file encryption system, and remote desktop hosting.
Another version is Windows RT, specifically designed and built for ARM based tablet users. Therefore, Windows RT can not run desktop applications. This operating system application can be downloaded from Windows Store.

4. Hardware Specification
To run Windows 8, a computer must have requirements at least: 1GHz processor, 1 GB RAM for 32-bit version and 2 GB for 64-bit version, 16 GB hard disk for 32-bit version and 20 GB for 64-bit version, DirectX 9 compatible graphic processor.

5. Interface
One of the biggest differences with older versions, Windows 8 removed “Start” button from the desktop. As a replacement, there is “Start” screen which contains applications, designed in boxes with thumbnails. In general, this new Windows 8 interface is more fit for notebook rather than a desktop, because the most notebook touchpad has input touch gesture option, which work better than a mouse.

6. Window Store
This application is similar to Apple App Store of Mac OS. In Window Store, users can download applications that designed specifically for Windows 8.

7. Cloud Connection
One feature that wasn’t available in the online version is cloud connection. Windows 8 is designed for the cloud, with built in SkyDrive, Microsoft’s cloud storage application. SkyDrive provides the latest Microsoft Office version that will be the default storage for documents so users can access it from any devices.

8. Windows Phone 8
Windows 8 applications are designed to be applicable for Windows Phone 8. At this moment they are two different applications, but Microsoft said that they are working to make one single operating system platform for both.

  1. Thanks for the article; it does a good job outlining the main points and features of the new windows operating system. I have personally had experience with the new system, and at the start it has caused a lot of problems, but once you get the kinks worked out...it's quite amazing.
