In what has largely been acknowledged as a laudable change, the Film Academy has announced hairstyles now will be eligible for the much coveted Oscars. This could give rise to some interesting times, and signify and entirely new wave in fashion and the hairstyle industry with repercussions around the world. You will probably see various celebrities sporting hairstyles in movies, which will be abundantly copied, and perhaps a lot of genres which could only toy around with special effects can now play with hairstyles and makeup too.
The award will now be called the Makeup and Hairstyle Award which will first be awarded at the 85th Academy Awards on February 24, 2013 at the Dolby Theater. According to the eligibility criteria, all hairstylists will have to provide the committee with detailed descriptions of all methods involved in their creation, and all artistes responsible. Two statues will be given for this award, except on rare occasions when it may exceed to three.
Remember the hair-dos in Star Wars? We believe that the genres to most benefit from this move will be science-fiction and fantasy, because there is just a very large scope for letting the imagination run wild. With historical movies this can be tricky, because you have to adhere to times gone past and fashions which once already existed. The scope for originality through works is harder to tap. Another genre that can be most beneficial is probably romantic comedies. We can just imagine a scene with a lead actor sporting a weird hairdo throughout the movie to make a statement, before settling down to something more normal.
This move by the Academy has been lauded by most patrons of the film industry. For a long time, this very integral part of movie-making has been ignored. It is obviously about time that they were recognized for their effort, especially because hair-styling is not everyone’s forte, it is an art. It can make or break a person’s look and their character. After all, how often have you done something to your hair and either loved it or regretted it?
But more than that, this encourages hairstylists all over the world to become bolder with their experimentation and gives them an area of growth. By making this decision, the message that the Academy has sent to hairstylists is that they have several ways to innovate and must tap that. So far we have only seen some tiny variations on regular hairstyles incorporated in movies. But perhaps now, in reel and real life, we will see some crazy, weird, and supremely stylistic creations of the hair!
