When people intent on visiting the nearest Vue cinemas to them wonder which film is worth going to see, the stars of a film often have a bearing on their decision. If a film has several different big names in its cast, then to some viewers, that makes it a more attractive proposition. It’s often the case that some of the most star-studded films of all time are also amongst the most memorable for one reason or another. With that in mind, here are seven of the most star-packed films ever to grace the silver screen:
Hamlet
This big-screen adaptation of the Shakespeare classic featured, among others, Kenneth Branagh, Julie Christie, Gerald Depardieu, Charlton Heston, Jack Lemmon and Sir John Mills, and was directed by Branagh himself. Among the more memorable re-workings of one of the Bard’s plays, Branagh’s reputation enabled him to assemble this stellar cast.
The Departed
Any actor worth their salt would be a fool to turn down the opportunity to work with Martin Scorsese, and Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Alec Baldwin showed that they weren’t foolish. This crime saga won Best Picture award at the Oscars, thus proving that a good cast always helps.
The Player
This comedy from the legendary Robert Altman had an ensemble cast featuring the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Cher, Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon and Jack Lemmon. Despite the potential for being overwhelmed by the sheer amount of big names, Altman held it all together, and even got an Oscar nomination for Best Director.
Heat
This thriller managed to pull off the feat of getting both Al Pacino and Robert De Niro to star alongside each other. De Niro played a bank robber while Pacino played an experienced LAPD detective, with both heavyweights putting in great performances.
JFK
This controversial biopic of the former US President had a cast which helped to gain the film multiple award nominations, in particular veteran Walter Matthau, while other stars including Joe Pesci and Sissy Spacek also received recognition for their performances. Strangely, Kevin Costner didn’t, despite playing the lead role.
Murder on the Orient Express
This 1974 mystery has the likes of Albert Finney, Ingrid Bergman, John Gielgud and Vanessa Redgrave to thank for its success, as they all proved that they were worthy of their previous status as Oscar nominees.
The Longest Day
One of the more memorable World War II movies, this proved to be a big attraction for Hollywood heavyweights. This film told the story of D-Day from the Allied and German viewpoints with turns from Richard Burton, John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and Rod Steiger among others.
