The Bloody Mary is sometimes a person’s first introduction into the world of spicy cocktails. I know that once I had tried one, I immediately started experimenting with hot sauce and hard liquor (try my patent-pending Lone Ranger shot- 1 part hot sauce 1 part whiskey, and then someone slaps you in the face and runs away). There is a wide variety in how spicy your drink can be; anything from mild warmth to breathing fire.
One of the more mild Bloody Mary variations is a Bull Shot. It’s pretty common in the cold weather of the U.K., especially at sports matches. It’s composed of vodka, beef bouillon, Tabasco and Worcestershire and is best served nice and warm. The end result is like drinking very nice warm alcoholic soup with a gentle kick. Try it out next time you are down about the weather; soon enough you will be looking forward to cold days as an excuse to drink these!
The Devil Cocktail is definitely a step up in spice from the Bull Shot; it’s just brandy, crème de menthe, and cayenne pepper. A lot of cayenne pepper. I tried one last time I went to Vegas, and it left me crying (much like my attempts at gambling). This drink is marking the shift from someone who enjoys a little spice to a true spice connoisseur.
The next level of spice would probably be a drink like the Red Pepper Sangrita Margarita. Made up of tequila, red pepper puree, tomato juice, and habanero tabasco this one is a real scorcher. The tomato flavor amplifies the heat of the habanero.
If these drinks aren’t enough to send you running for water, then all that is left is to ratchet up the type of pepper that you are using to spice your Bloody Mary. I suggest the bhut jolokia, the world’s spiciest pepper. A bar in Puerto Rico has started serving a Bloody Mary made with it, and it has been proclaimed “The World’s Spiciest Cocktail.” If you want to cool a hot tongue quickly, drink some horchata. It works wonders!
