Multiply is a social media site where users can share media like pictures, movie clips and blog posts. Launched in 2004, this site has over 11 million members today. Users’ networks are made up of their direct contacts and others connected to them via first degree relationships. Users usually specify the nature of the relationship which makes it possible to share media with the entire network of contacts, friends, family and professional colleagues.
What’s so special about it?
Multiply offers a great Web 2.0 experience; their blog modules enable hosting of videos on their pages directly rather than third party pages. Videos from sites like YouTube can be added, and there is no limit on the number of pictures a user can upload in the photo module. Similarly you can upload music tracks, write reviews, share links or the secret to great lasagna; you can also share your thoughts on products you have bought and liked.
Usually blog content is displayed in the order of the dates on which you posted in Multiply, you have the option to display it media category or topic wise.
The slam dunk from Multiply is that it enables automatic cross-posting. Whenever you post a new blog, it gets posted automatically to your Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad or Windows Live spaces account, if you’re a member; unless of course, you specify NOT to cross-post. You can also change the settings to exclude specific entries even with cross posting enabled. Similarly if you upload something new on any of those sites, Multiply will find out and post it to your account in Multiply as well. You can access these settings at My Account – Posting Options. If you don’t want to cross-post all entries, you can import specific blogs whenever you want.
Multiply offers tons of themes from which you can choose; you can also customize your site with regard to the layout and color scheme. On your homepage you will find the link ‘Customize My Site’, just beneath your personal info. Clicking on this link will let you to either choose from the templates or upload your own design. Not only can you add photos anywhere, you can also change their position within the blog. Another interesting feature of Multiply is that you can post entries via email and MMS; so you can use your mobile phone or tablet to add new entries.
How do you begin?
To post an entry, you need to go to the Post option in the top right corner of your homepage. You will again be given options; select Blog, and start typing away. You have the usual editing options at the top of the word processor. You can also make use of HTML when you type.
Just below the word processor box you have space for tagging and entering keywords; now this is handy as it helps those in your network to search posts on specific keywords, especially when you have posted a lot of entries.
Just as in any blogging site, members can set privacy, and control who can see a particular post; you can even embed a private post within a public one. Cool huh? You can preview your draft, modify it, and choose whether to publish it or save and use it later.
