10 Signs You’re Watching Too Much Home Improvement

Back in the 90s, family sitcoms like Family Matters and Full House ruled our TV schedule, but for me personally, none were as good as Tim Allen’s Home Improvement. The show ran from September 17, 1991 to May 25, 1999; and the eight series had several million US viewers until it aired across the globe gaining some more million viewers.
The show is about Tim “The Toolman” Taylor, who has his own TV show (Tool Time) about tools, gadgets and DIY. His co-host Al (played by Richard Karn) only wears flannel clothing, and is often trying to warn Tim from hurting himself on the show, while Tim is showing off to the audience. Al’s warnings are never headed (despite how many times Tim gets things wrong and ends up electrocuting himself), and his shy demeanour often annoys Tim. Their assistant is a good looking tool girl, played by Pamela Anderson (character name Lisa) in the first two seasons, and Debbe Dunning (known as Heidi) in the remaining six series, and has the largest fan base of the show, closely followed by Al, much to Tim’s annoyance as he is the star of the show.
At home Tim’s wife, Jill, (Patricia Richardson) is trying to get Tim to open up more about his emotions and discuss things with her, as well as stop blowing up appliances in their home. Tim also has three sons (Zachery Ty Bryan, Jonathan Taylor Thomas-voice of Disney’s Simba/ the Lion King, and Taran Noah Smith), who help Tim blow things up, but are usually just after his attention.
Tim seeks marital advice from his neighbour Wilson (the late Earl Hindman), who is a very wise man and whose face is never seen as the garden fence between the two properties always hides it. Wilson gives Tim very useful advice, which Tim never understands, but he still manages to follow it.
Last year marked the twentieth anniversary of the show’s first episode, and to honour this great programme, which I loved watching, here’s a fun infographic in its honour created on behalf of Shutters Direct, providers of wooden shutters for your home improvement projects. (Just don’t do a Tim Taylor.)
