The world of competitions is a rich and diverse one, with championships to decide all manner of events. Here we take a look at some of the more unusual ones which stretch the boundaries of rationality whilst providing us with some mind boggling spectacles, leaving us to marvel at the competitive spirit which compels these individuals to excel in their chosen events.
1. World Nettle Eating Championships
Taking place in Dorset, England the World Nettle Eating Championship attracts competitors from around the world. With one hour to eat as many nettles as possible individual achievements are measured by the length in feet of nettles they have eaten. Rules state that no substances can be used to numb the mouth against the sting of the plants, although guzzling down mouthfuls of the local ale between bites is most certainly not frowned upon. Participants have described the taste of the nettles as a cross between spinach and cow pat . . . yum!
2. The Gurning World Championships
Taking place in Cumbria, England the World Gurning Championships is perhaps one competition we wouldn't be too happy with winning considering the champion is the one deemed to have the ugliest face! The rules of the contest require the entrants to don a horse collar and pull the most hideous and contorted face they possibly can. Dating back over 700 years and with a cash prize of a respectable £150 + who could refuse the opportunity to participate?!
3. The World Sauna Championships
Since August 1999 Heinola, Finland has seen competitors from around the flock to it to take part in the Sauna World Championships. In order to enter participants must sign legal waiver stating that they will not take action on the organisation regardless of the potentially fatal consequences of subjecting themselves to the extreme heat of the sauna. The winner of the competition is the one who can sit in the 110 degree sauna for the longest - not an easy task when considering there is half a litre of water added every thirty seconds. n 2010 one fatality was recorded as a result of the extreme temperatures endured, standing as a testament to the very real level of danger involved in this event.
4. Gloucester Cheese Rolling
This one is most certainly not as tame as it sounds. The premise is to chase a rolling wheel of cheese down a very steep hill with the first one down being the winner and also claiming the cheese as their prize. A highly controversial event, questions have been asked over whether or not it should continue, with each years event seeing a range of injuries due to the often brutal tumbles taken in pursuit of the rolling cheese. However, support remains strong and with spectators and competitors alike coming from around the globe each year it looks as though it will not be ending any time soon.
5. The Worlds Ugliest Dog
Each year California plays host to the Worlds Ugliest Dog Competition which boasts a $1000 dollar reward as a prize to the owner of the most aesthetically challenged pooch. The winners also experience a wave of publicity with pictures circulating around the globe at a spectacular pace. Entrants are predominantly from the United States but canines from all continents are welcome to enter. Animal safety is ensured with all owners required to provide official documentation to state that the dog is in good health.
