Five Unusual (And Occasionally a Little Impractical) Watches

There are a multitude of watch designs to be found through out the world, but some designs offer a very alternative view of the watchmakers’ art.  Here’s a look at the unusual watches that are available around the world.

Phone watches

Not really a watch, more a mobile phone dropped in from the future.  The GD910 from the Korean electronics giant LG offers a timepiece, phone with video calling and MP3 music from a small device.  It’s perfect for those who hate carrying multiple items around town.  But, I would hate to see the battery life on this though given its compact size.

Paper strapped watch

How about something a little less practical?  A watch with a strap made from paper.  The watch is massively customisable (with a biro and a little bit of imagination) The watch is probably not suitable for swimming or even taking a stroll in the rain.

Wooden Watch

From paper to its source material – wooden watches replace the case and strap with the natural material.  The internal mechanism of the watch remains made of standard materials and feature a quartz mechanism.

Binocular watch

This design for MB&F comes in at a cool $158,000.  It’s a mechanically advanced watch with a rather simple user interface.  It tells the time and how much power it has stored in its springs.  The unconventional design is sure to be a starting point for many conversations.

Steampunk Watch

Featuring a highly accurate and gravity defying tourbillion within its movement, this miniature work of art features 1,352 components, driven by a 450-link chain and silver plated nickel drums. Two rotating drums indicate the time. It’s highly unlikely that the watch by Cabestan will be seen in the wild given its price tag of $275,000 and $675,000 for a diamond encrusted version.
