There are only two types of sites I create these days. Mini authority sites which are about 11 to 15 pages in length (on average, some are a bit bigger) and authority sites which start at about 40 to 50 pages and grow much bigger over time. I'm not going to talk about that in any depth just yet, that's for a later section, I just want you to know right now there are two different types of sites I create.
My mini authority sites are sites I create to test the profitability of a niche or keyword set and my authority sites are sites I create around a niche/multiple keyword sets that I know are profitable. I basically combine all my mini authority sites from one niche into one mega or authority site.
So when it comes to buying domain names, I have two policies. For my mini authority sites, I always, always buy a domain name with the main keyword I am targeting in it. So let's say I have a 15 page/keyword mini authority content site I want to create. One of those keywords I selected will be the main money keyword I am trying to rank for and I'll buy a domain name with that keyword in it.
There is absolutely no doubt that having the keyword in the domain name helps with ranking in Google and other search engines. I'm 100% sure that it helps. How much is debatable and it's absolutely not 100% something you have to do to get a good ranking, especially with authority sites.
Authority sites have their own different ranking criteria and benefits that smaller sites just don't have.
But if you are creating tight little niche sites with under 15 pages, it's a must to try and get the keyword you are targeting in the domain name. It gives you extra weight. Buying the exact match domain name is awesome if you can get it, but it's getting much harder to do that these days and I'm finding as long as your keyword is in the domain name, that's more than enough.
So for example.
Let's say the main keyword in my keyword set for a mini authority site I'm going to create (regardless if it's an Adsense or affiliate site) is “easy cocktail recipes”. I'd want to get that keyword phrase in my domain name. If I could not get easycocktailrecipes.com or .net or .org, I'd try another combination,
but keeping those keywords in tact.
