Hosting a party can be stressful, especially if you really want to throw a good one. In my view, the best way to throw a good party is to have an appropriate drink selection. “Whiskey runs, fun follows” or something along those lines is probably an apt expression. Getting a menu together for drinks can be hard, especially if you are expecting a lot of people to attend. However, with only a few ingredients, you can ensure you will have a wide variety of drinks for people to choose from.
One of the easiest and tastiest drinks to make is Sangria. A bottle of red wine, some lemon, sugar, brandy, and ginger ale all combine into a great summer drink that is easy to make and easy on the wallet. Pick up some Two Buck Chuck from your local Trader Joe’s to really cut costs, and no one will know the difference. You can add some white wine and limes to give it a lighter, drier taste if the red wine/brandy combo is a bit to heady for you and your group of friends. This is a good drink to mass produce the night before your party.
Highballs are super easy to make as well. Ginger ale and whiskey are the only two ingredients, and they go quite well together. A connoisseur may notice if you don’t use a high quality whiskey, but most people won’t. Quantity is usually preferred over quality at an average social gathering, so feel free to get something that comes in a plastic handle. Along the lines of the Highball are other basic drink combinations like Gin & Tonic, Jack and Coke, or Rum and Coke. These drinks always go over well, and are super cheap and easy to make.
A Lemon Drop Martini is also a great party drink; it has gone over very well every time I have tried it. It’s just vodka, lemon juice, and sugar syrup. It’s more of a sour drink, but it goes down easily and would be great especially if you are serving desserts or something sweet to balance out the flavor.
Whatever you decide to do keep in mind that fancy drink glasses can make a run of the mill drink seem much more exciting than it would be served in your everyday kitchen glasses. The same also holds true for garnishes like tiny umbrellas or lemon peels.
