We’ve all noticed that guy making faces into the camera during the field reports of the local news, usually completely unbeknownst to the reporter. These hilarious video segments are known as videobombs, similar to popular “photobomb” memes that feature individuals making faces, gestures, or being otherwise funny in still photographs. Videobombs exponentially increase the hilarity of photobombs, as the “star” is usually straight-faced, completely unaware of the action behind him or her, or just completely loses it. These are some of the best videobombs to hit the Internet.
In this epic video bomb, BBC Scotland reporter Catriona Renton attempts to describe the atmosphere of the pub as fans pour in to watch a football game and cheer for their favorite teams. Directly over Renton’s right shoulder, however, a man can’t resist taking the spotlight. Renton is clearly aware of the man’s presence, but remains entirely professional throughout his performance, despite his making faces, winking at the camera, and brief moment of dancing. She almost loses focus a few times, but ultimately keeps her cool and finishes her report. Check it out, it’s sure to give you a laugh.
2. Little brother steals the show
In September 2011, a teenage girl was practicing for her drill team dance and recorded her moves to Akon’s “Smack That” song. She went on for nearly a full minute before she realized that her younger brother was videobombing her – and completely stealing the show while he was at it. Little bro moves in and out of the doorway behind his sister with smooth and hilarious dance moves. When she realizes what he’s doing, he tries to run away and hide from the ire of his big sister, but trips in the hallway and screams, “Mom!” as she draws near. We can only imagine what happens next… In less than a year, this videobomb has achieved nearly three million views on YouTube, making it one of the greatest videobombs of all time.
3. Baba Booey! Baba Booey!
In July 2011, CNN national correspondent Susan Candiotti was attempting to cover news regarding New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg’s plans to officiate two weddings for gay couples on his staff after same-sex marriage was legalized in the state. Mere seconds into her report, a man walks behind her and shouts, “Baba Booey! Baba Booey! Howard Stern’s P.nis! Baba Booey!” His comments are too loud to be ignored, and Candiotti apologizes for the interruption as cameras switch back to Fredricka Whitfield in the CNN Newsroom studio.
4. Stealing the spotlight
In this epic videobomb, a Fox News reporter is interviewing Stephen Levy, a technology columnist for Newsweek, about the new iPhone 3GS. Before Levy could even finish answering the first question, a man walks up and grabs the microphone from the reporter. Refusing to let go, she nearly falls as she is practically dragged away by the man. Fox security then tackles the man to the floor just before the producers cut the camera. Not only is this videobomb hilarious for the viewer, but it was a complete fail for the microphone thief – did he really think he could away with it?
5. Fight in the newsroom
This is one of the great videobombs on the Internet. While not a traditional videobomb, in that the “bombers” weren’t directing their attention toward the camera itself, their background melee certainly qualifies. In the video, and Italian news anchor is finishing his report when two of the newsroom workers behind him seem to have an argument over something on the computer. Suddenly, the two start fighting and wrestle each other to the ground. After completing his report and saying, “Arrivederci,” the anchor notices the fight behind him and quickly runs off set.
Now that you’ve seen our top five, what do you think? Could you have done better? Post a link to your favorite videobomb.
