Bizarre Anti-Aging Methods

The fountain of youth has long been the holy grail for many people throughout the history of humanity. Legends and lore have been written about individuals who achieved immortality and finally surmounted the primal hurdle that is age. Many in the 21st century continued the search for a remedy to the merciless ravages of time, both in mainstream and alternative medicine through the use of technology, science and hocus-pocus, and the age of the internet has allowed the unchecked propagation of countless ludicrous ‘theories’ on how we can stop time dead in its tracks. Here are some of the strangest, least scientific, most mystifying anti-aging solutions from history.

Bee Venom Skin Care

What happened to eating right and exercising as the best way to stay healthy, vibrant, and young? Bee venom is one strange way that many people across the world have adopted for facials as a way to tighten the skin. However, the cost of bee venom is fairly high, at $130 a pot, making it a slightly expensive way to reduce the effects of aging. Many report that it actually works as long as you can get past the fact that you are putting venom on your face. We can only assume that this hurts at least as much as being stung by a bee, and being stung by a bee hurts, so we’ll steer clear.

Placenta

As probably one of the grosser anti-aging techniques, some people use placenta face masks as a way to make the skin look younger and wrinkle free. It seems to make sense since as placenta is used in the nurturing and birth of the youngest living being – an unborn baby, though the scientific basis for such an approach seems dubious at best. The placenta is freeze dried and turned into a sterilized powder which is used in the face mask. Jennifer Lopez was even reported to claim to be a fan of placenta anti aging masks at a VH1 special.

Bird Droppings

Bird droppings are more than just an unwelcome present on your car in the morning. Nightingale droppings are imported exclusively through the Ten Thousand Waves Spa in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Some people will go to great lengths to hold on to their youth, even if that means rubbing dried (yet sanitized!) bird dung, then so be it. At the very least, this might make you feel a little less sore next time a bird takes one on you from a great height.

Snail Gel

Even if you drench ‘escargot’ in a load of butter and garlic, making snails sound appetizing is near impossible. However, snails are also used in gel to reduce the effects of aging. Snail gel is a fitting way to slow aging seeing as they are some of the slowest creatures on the planet. The gel can help heal wounds, reduce wrinkles, fight acne, and restore broken skin all giving a younger appearance, according to proponents.

Leech Therapy

We all know about history’s obsession with leeches. For a long time the favourite of doctors of yore and employed as cure for nearly every ailment under the sun, some now think that leeching is a good anti aging treatment that rejuvenates the spirit and body. Demi Moore went on the Letterman show and discussed her anti aging leech treatment aimed at purifying her blood. Now someone get that woman an up-to-date medical textbook, stat!
